Vincent de Kastav, The Visitation

1474
Fresco
Church of St. Mary, Beram, Croatia

It would seem that the woman on the left is Mary despite the red garment. Usually she wears blue, but perhaps the colors have changed with time. The other woman stands at the door and so should be Elizabeth. Behind Mary's back are two other women, most likely some of the virgins that had accompanied her to the house where she stayed after Joseph was chosen for her. The two male figures are very similar, so they may both be Elizabeth's husband Zechariah, with the indoor scene representing Zechariah's revelation when he was burning incense at the "altar of incense" in the Temple (Luke 1:5-20).
